Admitted to 3rd Field Ambulance, 24 November 1915 (mumps); rejoined Bn, 7 December 1915. Disembarked Alexandria, 29 December 1915 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Attached for duty to 1st Brigade Machine Gun Company, 12 March 1916. Promoted Lieutenant, 12 March 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 22 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 28 March 1916. Seconded for duty with 1st Machine Gun Company, 1 April 1916. Transferred to 3rd Bn, 1 December 1916. Promoted Captain, 1 December 1916. On Command, 1st Australian Divisional Gas School, 7 February 1917; rejoined Bn from detachment, 10 February 1917. Detached to 5th Army School, 1 April 1917; rejoined Bn, 9 May 1917. On leave to United Kingdom, 6 July 1917; rejoined Bn from leave, 18 July 1917. Killed in action, Belgium, 5 October 1917. Statement, Red Cross File No 1320812H, 4619 Pte C. VILES, D Company, 3rd Bn (patient, Bevan Military Hospital, Sandgate, England), 7 December 1917: 'Capt. Hewish was killed by a piece of shell. I helped to carry him back and we buried him in a shell hole on Anzac ridge Passchendaele. There has been a cross put up with his name on it, I think, but I am not sure.' Second statement, 4538 Pte W.H. NICHOLSON, 3rd Bn (patient, 7th Canadian General Hospital, France), 7 December 1917: 'At Broodseinde ridge, on the night of 5th. Oct. we were being relieved and Capt Hewish had just left Co. HQ. A shrapnel pellet hit him in the chest and seemed to go through his heart. He was killed in stantly. I was near at the time. He was carried to Bn. HQ. and buried in the grave-yard there. He was my Co. commander.' Third statement, Captain F.W. RICHARDS, Machine gun Company (patient, 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, England), December 1917: 'I knew Capt. Hewish. He used to be in my Coy. He was killed by a shrapnel wound through the heart after the attack Oct. 4-5 at Molenaarelthock (Map location J. 5 Sheet 28). I cannot say place of burial.' Nine additional statements on file.
