Military Medal Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 189 Date: MM Bar 'During attack operations near WESTHOEK east of YPRES on 20th September, 1917, 2nd Corporal HANDO was senior N.C.O. of a party detailed to mark out a communication trench immediately after the attack. In face of heavy shell fire and sniping 2nd Corporal HANDO very coolly and gallantly ran out the tapes to mark the trench, carrying on and completing the work after the officer in charge was twice wounded. 2nd Corporal HANDO afterwards inspected the work being done on the trench, and directed the Infantry working on it. 2nd Corporal HANDO's example and general conduct contributed very largely to the success of this work.'
