Military Medal 'During the attack on POLYGON WOOD on 20th September, 1917, Sapper HILL displayed conspicuous gallantry in carrying out his duties as linesman. For the first 24 hours of the attack he continuously patrolled the line connecting Brigade Headquarters with the Brigade forward station over ground which was subjected to very heavy enemy shell fire with the result that constant communication was maintained between these two points. He remained on duty 48 hours without rest or sleep and rendered very valuable service.'
