Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and coolness on the 1 September 1918, during the attack on Mont St. Quentin. When the leading platoon was advancing a shell landed among the party, killing the commander and burying nine others. He at once took charge, rallied the men in the vicinity, dug out the buried men and reorganized the remainder.'
