Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was detailed to mark out a track to the captured position immediately after an attack. He led his men forward through an intense enemy barrage and carried out his task with great rapidity under continuous artillery and machine gun fire. He rendered splendid service in completing the track and making a communication trench, his coolness, courage and determination to complete the task in the face of all difficulties being a splendid example to his men.'
