'At POLYGON WOOD on 26/28 September 1917, during the time the Battalion was actively engaged, this N.C.O. was continuously employed as a runner, being entrusted with the delivery of important messages both to Brigade and Company Headquarters. All of these he safely delivered - often through barrage fire - utterly regardless of his own personal safety. He continued working until completely exhausted.'
