'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He showed the greatest coolness and determination in maintaining the ammunition supply under circumstances of the greatest possible danger from a dump of shrapnel and gas shell which was burning fiercely and exploding in all directions. He re-organized a party and successfully carried out the work.'
