'During the operations east of YPRES between 20th and 21st September, 1917m L/Cpl. NAWELL and Pte. FOULKES acted as Runners for their Battalion and when no means of communication were available carried important messages through barrage fire between Battalion Headquarters and the Front Line. Their work required great skill, pluck and grit. They performed this work in a highly satisfactory and commendable manner and by their gallantry and devotion to duty contributed largely to the success of the operations.'
