'During the operations in the vicinity of HARBONNIERES, East of VILLERS-BRETONNEUX on 8th August 1918, this man displayed most conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty by salvaging a German machine gun which was close up to the enemy, bringing it into action and inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy causing him to retire. At all times he has set a splendid example to his comrades by his bravery and untiring devotion to duty.'
