Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in defence of a hill. Acting as troop leader on the exposed corner of the hill, he twice led bayonet charges to clear away enemy bombers who had reached to within 20 yards of his position. Although one third of his troop of sixteen became casualties, he hung on to his exposed position and set a splendid example of coolness and determination to his men.'
