'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He twice led a party under heavy shell fire, and removed two guns which had been abandoned by the enemy in an attack. This he successfully achieved in daylight. He had previously shown great coolness and gallantry in extinguishing fires in his battery position and saving quantities of ammunition and equipment.'
