'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his men with great dash and determination, keeping them well under control by his fearless example, and reached his objective in spite of intense artillery and machine gun fire. He consolidated his position and displayed great courage and coolness under heavy bombardments.'

Bar to Military Cross

'During an attack against the Hindenburg line, north of Belllicourt, on 30th September 1918, he, in face of heavy machine gun fire, led his company with great determination, and captured many enemy and machine guns. At one period, when all senior officers had become casualties, he took charge of the two attacking battalions, re-organized them for the pursuit of the enemy. He showed great courage and ability to command.'
