Military Medal

'For great courage and devotion to duty, near BELLICOURT during the operations of 30th September and 1st and 2nd October. Private GILLESPIE, in company with Private STRINGER, was employed as runners between the Brigade Forward Station and the attacking Battalions. When several of the Brigade Signal Section linesmen became casualties Private GILLESPIE volunteered for the work, and although he had never had any training in telephone line work he did splendidly and worked continuously for three days and nights maintaining the lines under heavy shell and machine gun fire. The fact that almost continuous telephonic communication was maintained throughout the operations between Brigade Headquarters and the Battalions is largely due to his great courage and endurance.'
