'On 24th April, 1918, between the rivers ANCRE and SOMME, east of HEILLY, this Battery was in the area subjected to a very heavy and continuous enemy bombardment with H.E. and gas shell. On 4 separate occasions this N.C.O. and man showed the utmost courage and coolness in going to the assistance of wounded comrades, personally rendering first aid and acting as stretcher bearers, carrying wounded men to the Dressing Station through an area which was being heavily shelled and gassed. By their courage, coolness, and devotion to duty, both set a very fine example to the Battery. Their action was voluntary, and actuated by a sense of comradeship, they were not ordered to undertake the rescue.'
