'On 3rd, 4th and 5th October, 1917, East of YPRES, he volunteered as a Motor Cycle Despatch Rider to maintain communication between the Forward Bearer Posts and Headquarters, and for three days and nights, during the operations, he carried out his duties under very difficult and dangerous circumstances, along bad roads exposed to enemy shell fire.'
