'During the Battalion's operations in YPRES Salient in September and October, 1917, the fine work of this N.C.O. materially contributed to the opening up and improvement of forward roads. Work parties had often to move up through a barrage and to work under heavy shelling. He displayed exceptional coolness and sound judgment in handling his section on several occasions. His work under trying conditions and general conduct under fire have always been highly commendable.'
