'On many occasions during the operations at PERONNE on 2nd September 1918 this N.C.O. led his team of machine gunners through heavy shell and machine gun fire, and gave valuable help to the attacking Infantry. His team suffered casualties, but he coolly arranged for the evacuation of the wounded, and all the time kept his guns in action with great effect. He set a fine example to his associates.'
