'On the night 11th/12th August, 1918, during operations on the SOMME, near PROYART, this N.C.O. after his Company Commander and another Officer of the Company had become casualties, assumed command of the Company during the attack and led it to its final objective. Being unable to find any Officer to take over command he reorganised the Company and promptly forwarded valuable information to Battalion Headquarters.
