Proceeded overseas to France, 16 January 1917; taken on strength, 45th Bn, in the field, 17 January 1917.

Admitted to 13th Australian Field Ambulance, 4 May 1917 (acute cellulitis, left arm); discharged same day to Divisional Rest Station; admitted to 56th Casualty Clearing Station, 7 May 1917; discharged to duty, 14 May 1917; rejoined Bn, 18 May 1917.

Wounded in action, 7 June 1917 (gun shot wound, abdominal wall), and admitted to 77th Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 53rd Casualty Clearing Station; to No 2 Stationary Hospital, Abbeville, 10 June 1917; to England, 18 June 1917, and admitted same day to Bethnal Green Military Hospital, London. Transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 29 June 1917; discharged on furlough, 17 July 1917, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 31 July 1917.

Found guilty, Weymouth, 3 August 1917, of being absent without leave from 6 pm, 31 July, to 10.30 pm, 1August 1917: awarded 4 days? Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited a total of 7 days? pay.
