'On the night of 20th/21st July, 1917, near MESSINES, Private GORWELL, with three other stretcher bearers succeeded under an intense shell fire in carrying two severely wounded men to an Advanced Regimental Aid Post. Hearing that there was still a wounded man lying out in the open, Private GORWELL returned alone under heavy shell fire to search for the wounded man and with the assistance of an Infantryman succeeded in getting the casualty to a dug out where he attended to him, ultimately getting him back to the Regimental Aid Post. Private GORWELL displayed gallantry and showed an utter disregard for personal risk.'
