Meritorious Service Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 6th October, 1917, during the operations East of YPRES, he was sent forward with Pack animals at a time when the road was being very heavily shelled. By his coolness and utter disregard of danger. he was able to deliver his load in the shortest time possible. He has at all times shown the greatest possible coolness when under enemy fire, besides an earnest desire to preserve animals under his charge from becoming casualties. He is a splendid example to other men of the Section, carrying out his duties cheerfully under most trying circumstances.'
