Admitted to 17th Field Ambulance, Gallipoli, 24 October 1915 (catarrh jaundice); discharged to duty, 29 October 1915; rejoined 25th Bn, 30 October 1915. Admitted to 7th Field Ambulance, 3 November 1915; discharged to duty, 5 November 1915. Admitted to 1st Casualty Clearing Station, 25 November 1915. Disembarked Alexandria, 9 January 1916 (general Gallipoli evacuation).

Admitted to New Zealand Auxiliary Hospital, Ismailia, 15 March 1916 (flat foot); transferred to No. 1 Australian General Hospital, 15 March 1916; to No. 3 Australian General Hospital, Abbassia, 15 March 1916; discharged to Overseas Base, 25 March 1916, 25 March 1916.

Embarked for England with 7th training Bn, 1 June 1916; proceeded overseas to France, 22 May 1917; taken on strength, 25th Bn, 12 June 1917.

Wounded in action, Belgium, 4 October 1917 (gun shot wound, left elbow), and admitted to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to 14th General Hospital, 7 October 1917; invalided to England, 9 October 1917, and admitted to Norfolk war hospital, 10 October 1917; left arm amputated. Granted furlough, 22 January to 5 February 1918, to report to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 5 February 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Dunluce Castle', 8 April 1918; transferred to HT 'Port Darwin', Cairo, 17 July 1918; disembarked Sydney, 17 August 1918; discharged, 24 September 1918.
