Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This N.C.O. with one man rushed an enemy trench, from which the advance was being held up. He killed several and captured two officers, forty seven men, and a machine gun, thereby clearing the way for a further advance. This magnificent action had an inspiring effect on the men with him.'
