'Near ZONNEBEKE during the period 23/27th L/Cpl. GRAY displayed conspicuous courage and devotion to duty. He was in charge of a telephone in the most forward post of the Battalion front and 400 yards from Coy. Headquarters. It was absolutely essential communication should be maintained and prompt reports sent back from this post. The line was broken very frequently by enemy shell fire, and L/Cpl. GRAY with the utmost disregard of personal danger on each occasion repaired the breaks and restored communication to Coy. Headquarters. His work enabled important messages regarding the position on our front and our left flank to be passed back to Brigade with the least possible delay.'
