'During the operations east of YPRES on 4th October 1917, he was employed on the construction of a communication trench between two strong points on BECELAERE RIDGE. During the whole of the day under heavy and continuous shell fire, he carried out his duties in a very cool and courageous manner. During the afternoon when the remaining N.C.O.s of his section became casualties he assumed the extra responsibility in an excellent manner and set a fine example to his men.'
