'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the operations near Estrees, on 3 and 4 October, 1918. He was in charge of the Pioneer Section during the attack, and volunteered to carry stores, ammunition, and bombs to the forward posts. It was due to his example under heavy fire that the necessary material and ammunition was got forward in time for the successful attack.'
