Disembarked Suez, 16 May 1916; allotted to 14th Training Bn, 24 May 1916.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 21 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Taken on strength, 54th Bn, 3 August 1916.

Found guilty, 2 September 1916, of being absent without leave, 1900, 2 September, to 2030, 3 September 1916 (25.5. hours): awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2 and forfeited 2 days' pay.

Found guilty, 19 September 1916, of leaving the firing line without permission: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2.

Wounded in action, 15 May 1917 (gun shot wound, left arm; gas), admitted same day to 14th Field Ambulance, and transferred to 29th Casualty Clearing Station; transferred by Ambulance train No 28 to 8th Stationary Hospital, Wimereux, 16 May 1917; transferred to England, 17 May 1917, and admitted to Fort Pitt Military Hospital, Chatham, Kent, 18 May 1917. Discharged on furlough, 22 June 1917, to report to No 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, 6 July 1917. Marched in to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 27 July 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Borda', 26 September 1917; discharged Sydney (rheumatism and senility), 3 January 1918.
