Embarked Sydney on HMAT 'Anchises', 24 January 1917; disembarked Devonport, 27 March 1917, and marched into 14th Training Bn, Hurdcott.

Found guilty at Hurdcott, 17 July 1917, of being absent from contact roll call, 13 July 1917: awarded 3 days' Field Punishment No 2.

Proceeded to France through Southampton, 4 December 1917.

Marched into 5th Australian Divisional Base Depot, Havre, 5 December 1917; moved into the field, 8 December 1917; taken on strength of unit, 11 December 1917; detached to Australian Corps Bombing School, 22 January 1918; rejoined unit from detachment, 10 February 1918.

Admitted to 5th Australian Divisional Receiving Station, 26 February 1918 (scabies); discharged to duty, 7 March 1918; rejoined unit in the field, 8 March 1918.

Admitted to 6th Field Ambulance, 1 September 1918, and transferred to 37th Casualty Clearing Station (shrapnel wound, right thigh); to Ambulance Train '18', 2 September 1918, and admitted to 9th General Hospital, Rouen. Embarked on HS 'Guildford Castle' and proceeded to England for further treatment, 4 September 1918; admitted to 1st War Hospital, Birmingham, 6 September 1918 (gun shot wound, right thigh); discharged on furlough, 13 November 1918.

Found guilty in London, 28 November 1918, of being absent without leave, 10.00 am, 27 November, to 9.30 am, 28 November 1918: awarded a fine of 1 days' pay; forfeited total of 2 days' pay; marched into No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 29 November 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on HT 'Bakara', 22 December 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 14 February 1919. Discharged Sydney, 30 March 1919.
