'Near Mereaucourt Wood, on the 28 August, 1918, it became necessary to silence a hostile machine gun before an assault group could move forward. He called for volunteers for a bombing party, led them with the greatest courage and skill to within close range, when he rushed the gun, capturing it with eleven unwounded prisoners.'
