'On September 3rd during the operation of forcing a passage to FLAMICOURT near PERONNE, Lance Corporal FLAMICOURT was one of a fighting patrol under Lieutenant MARXEN. The only possible approach across the swamps of the SOMME was along the railway embankment which was swept by machine gun fire. It was a hazardous undertaking - almost a forlorn hope - for the enemy had ....... immense advantage. Lieutenant MARXEN was killed and several of the party were wounded and the patrol was forced to fall back some distance. Lance Corporal GUILMARTIN returned alone under severe hostile fire picked up Lieutenant Marxen in his arms and carried him back to cover. His courage and devotion to duty are worthy of highest praise.'
