Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 20 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 30 June 1916. Reverted from Sergeant to rank of Private at own request, 25 July 1916. Transferred to 5th Division Trench Mortar Brigade, 8 August 1916.

To hospital, sick, 19 August 1916, and admitted to 15th Field Ambulance (old injury to fibula); rejoined unit from hospital, 31 August 1916.

Wounded in action (2nd occasion), 31 May 1918 (shrapnel wound, left forearm), and admitted to 14th Australian Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 47th Casualty Clearing Station; discharged to duty, 29 June 1918; rejoined unit, 5 July 1918.

Wounded in action (3rd occasion), 11 August 1918 (bullet wound, left thigh), and admitted to 5th Australian Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 53rd Casualty Clearing Station, and thence to Ambulance Train No 14, and admitted to 9th General Hospital, Rouen, 12 August 1918; transferred to England, 14 August 1918, and admitted to 2nd Southern General Hospital, Bristol, 15 August 1918. Discharged on fourlough, 23 October 1918, to report to No 1 Command Depot, 6 November 1918.

Promoted Temporary Corporal, 10 April 1919.

Married Agnes Dowdles McCLYMONT, aged 20, domestic servant, of Sutton Veny, at Register Office, Warminster, Wiltshire, 8 August 1919.
