Military Medal 'During the advance near ZONNEBEKE on the 26th September, 1917, the Company of which he was a member was engaged digging a communication trench from the old front line to the 1st Objective, when Sergeant GURNEY's Platoon Commander became a casualty. GURNEY realised the vital importance of the task, and displayed great coolness and initiative by the manner in which he took over command of his Platoon and saw the work through to a successful conclusion. He has at all times set a splendid example by his bravery and cheerfulness in spite of adverse conditions.'
