'At 4.30 p.m. on 18th September 1918 near LE VERGUIER the enemy opened a heavy bombardment with H.E. and gas on the temporary wagon lines of this battery close to its guns. Personnel and horses were evacuated. One of Driver HALL's horses was killed and he sustained a heavy fall by which he was badly shaken. The limber was left behind but procuring a fresh horse and wearing a box respirator owing to the gas he returned to his limber. After considerable difficulty he succeeded in extricating the limber and taking it to a place of safety. His conduct notwithstanding that he had been shaken by the fall from his horse was of the highest order and he showed great determination and bravery under the heavy fire.'
