Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as a Stretcher-bearer on 8th June 1917, during the operations on the MESSINES RIDGE. All that day he carried wounded through intense enemy shell fire, passing many times through a heavy barrage. When one of the other stretcher-bearers had been badly wounded Private HANCE assisted to carry him out until he himself was wounded. In spite of this he would not leave another bearer who had been wounded at the same time, but remained with him in a shell hole for several hours and finally assisted to carry him out through heavy fire.'
