'East of YPRES on the night 21st/22nd September, 1917, when telephonic communication between Battalion Headquarters and Companies had been broken and could not be maintained owing to heavy shelling, as runner he conveyed a number of messages in quick succession from Battalion Headquarters to Company Headquarters through heavy enemy shelling.'
