'For unexampled bravery and devotion to duty in the operations near ZONNEBEKE on 26th September, 1917. He was a Company runner and when our communications had broken down through being unable to read the lamp through the smoke and dust caused by ours and enemy barrage he without consideration of his own safety ran back to Battalion Headquarters with a most important message. This performance by a very young soldier greatly impressed his comrades and was a great example to them.'
