'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During an extremely heavy enemy bombardment he moved up and down the parapet of the trench, regardless of risk, encouraging his men. In an attack he took charge of a platoon who had lost their officer, and re-organized them under heavy shell fire with the greatest courage and determination.'
