War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Sydney on HMAT 'Clan MacGillivray', 3 May 1916; disembarked Alexandria, 13 June 1916. Transferred to 5th Pioneer Bn, Moascar, 16 June 1916; taken on strength of unit, 17 June 1916. Embarked Alexandria on HT 'Canada' and proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 26 June 1916. Found guilty in the field, 5 August 1916, of being absent without leave, 12.00 pm, 4 August, to 3.45 pm, 4 August 1916: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2; detached to Anzac Light Railway Company, 7 January 1917. Admitted to 15th Field Ambulance, 26 March 1917 (dental complications); transferred to 5th Divisional Receiving Station, 26 March 1917; to 56th Casualty Clearing Station, 25 April 1917; to Ambulance Train, 27 April 1917; admitted to 12th General Hospital, Rouen, 28 April 1917 (rheumatism).
