'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during two nights, when he superintended the construction of bridges across a river under most trying conditions, and with an utter disregard for shell fire, and it was owing to his fine courage and example that the work was so successfully carried out. It was of paramount importance, as a ferry, the only communication across, had been destroyed by shell fire.'
