'In the capture of Mont St. Quentin, on the 1st September 1918, he commanded a company with the greatest gallantry and courage, leading it forward ofr 600 yards in the face of a withering machine gun fire until held up. He then made a daring reconnaissance along, and the information gained enabled him to lead his men forward a second time, thus materially helping in the capture of the southern half of Mont St. Quentin.
