'He rendered invaluable assistance in the consolidation and defensive organisation of the left flank during the operations on the night of 4th/5th February, 1917, north east of GUEUDECOURT. His conspicuous bravery under fire, and example, stimulated his men in the attack, and in their determination to consolidate, and if necessary, defend the position to the last man. He has always on previous occasions shown great bravery, and as Sergeant of the Bombing Platoon is one of the most valuable N.C.O.s in the Battalion. In the counter attack he fearlessly exposed himself in order to direct the fire of the rifle grenades. I strongly recommend him for the D.C.M.'
