Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the attack he volunteered as bayonet man when the other men had become casualties, and followed up the bombing attack with great courage. Although wounded he still continued, and later threw bombs under heavy machine gun fire until exhausted.'
