Statement, Red Cross File No 1281014, 2790 Pte L. BRETHERTON, A Company, 59th Bn, 8 April 1919: 'He was killed by shell fire at Armentieres. I saw his body - he was buried in a cemetery [at] Armentieres. A cross was erected.'

Second statement, 3571 Pte M. MACHIN, 59th Bn (patient, Chipstead VAD Hospital, Kent, England), 18 September 1916: 'Informant states that on "July 19th I saw W.H. Hart (of my bombing section) killed by a shell."'

Third statement, 1901 Pte H. DEZELL, 59th Bn, 19 October 1916: 'It was on the day of the 19th July, when we raided the German lines, that W.H. Hart, was hit in the face by a bomb, which exploded. After that I never saw him again. Of course, there is a chance that he was only wounded and taken prisoner by one of their night patrols, but I doubt it.'
