War service: Western Front Embarked Adelaide, 10 February 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 2 May 1917, and marched into 13th Training Bn, Codford. Admitted to Group Hospital, Codford, 28 May 1917 (mumps); rejoined 13th Training Bn, 26 June 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 6 August 1917; taken on strength, 50th Bn, in the field, 25 August 1917. Tried by Field General Court Martial, 29 October 1917, on charge of When on Active Service deserting His Majesty's Service from 13/10/17 to 23/10/17; pleaded 'Not Guilty'; found 'Guilty': awarded 10 years' penal servitude, and forfeiture of a total of 10 years and 16 days' pay. Sentence commuted to 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour, 28 November 1917. Admitted to No 7 Military Prison, Les Attaque. Admitted to 30th General Hospital, Calais, 30 March 1918 (pneumonia); readmitted to No 7 Military Prison same day. Remainder of sentence suspended as from 21 June 1918; rejoined 50th Bn, 30 June 1918.
