'At PETILLON on 19th/20th July, 1916 Corporal HAWKE showed conspicuous bravery in assisting to repel a German bombing party that came along a communication trench towards the front of our position. When this attack was finally beaten off, he carried grenades to the left flank and again assisted in driving back the enemy. He was not a grenadier bu his coolness and bravery in handling and throwing grenades were very noticeable, and furnished a splendid example for the men to follow.'
