'On 12th October, 1917, in front of PASSCHENDAELE RIDGE, Lance Corporal HAWKINS had charge of a Stretcher Squad at BREMEN HOUSE. He carried out his work more or less constantly under shell fire for sixty (60) hours and after one night's rest volunteered to return to Forward Area where he remained on duty for forty-eight (49) hours. He showed a splendid spirit of perseverance, courage, and endurance.'
