Admitted to 31st General Hospital, Pt Said, 10 September 1916; transferred to No. 14 Australian General Hospital, Cairo, 14 September 1916. Discharged from Convalescent Depot, Abbassia, to Moascar, 28 January 1917. Taken on strength, 2nd Light Horse Training Regiment, 29 January 1917. Detached to School of Instruction, Moascar, 15 April 1917; rejoined unit, 25 April 1917, after completing Hotchkiss Gun Course and qualifying as Gunner.

Transferred to 5th Light Horse Regiment, 1 July 1917. Treated at 35th Casualty Clearing Station, 3 November 1917 (diarrhoea); transferred to 14th Australian General Hospital, Abbassia, 7 November 1917. Discharged to Abbassia Convalescent Depot, 12 December 1917 (debility after dysentery), Rejoined unit, 21 July 1918. Appointed Temporary Squadron Quartermaster Sergeant, 8 November 1918; promoted to substantive position, 31 March 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Madras'from Kantara, 28 June 1919; disembarked Sydney, 3 August 1919; discharged, 15 October 1919.
