Military Medal 'For bravery and dash under heavy rifle and machine gun fire. At LAGNICOURT, at dawn on April 15th 1917, when enemy attacked in force Corporal Hay was in charge for a section of the picquet. He organised his men in a very efficient manner, directed their fire and kept them supplied with bombs and ammunition - he was untiring and showed tremendous forethought. He assisted his platoon sergeant, and under very very heavy enemy machine gun fire, to remove a captured machine gun to prevent its recapture. His example was magnificent and gave his men great confidence during a doubtful period.'
