'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations East of YPRES between 4/6 October, 1917. Being in charge of a Lewis Gun he pushed on during a heavy barrage by the enemy and was able to cover the advance of his platoon. He showed an excellent example to those around him thoughout the operations.'
