'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He set a splendid example by moving up and down on the parapet of a trench which was being dug, and encouraging and directing the men under heavy shell and machine gun fire. On a stretcher being called for, he went back through a particularly intense barrage and brought it up, afterwards carrying on with his work.'
